Description
This "Prince Albert" men's frock coat, probably dating from the first decade of the 20th century, is double breasted in style, with the horizontal waist seam, sleeve cuffs and covered buttons typical of the late Victorian to Edwardian frock coat. The fabric of the coat has a distinct diagonal rib, and feels like wool blended with some silk, giving it a bit of sheen and a softer hand than wool alone. The coat has black braid trim at the cuffs and on the edge of the lapels, an unusual feature. It has the curved seams and decorative buttons in back that also are typical of frock coats from this era. The lapels were made separately and then attached, rather than being made all-in-one with the body of the coat. It is lined with cotton (or a cotton blended with a bit of silk) and the sleeves are lined with lighter striped fabric. The several inner pockets are lined with olive oilcloth. The jacket has very lightly padded shoulders, and is a very small size, approximately a men's size 34 (or a ladies' size XS-S). Please see the measurements for more details. It is in very good condition, with some minor wear and fading to the lining fabric and a few small moth munches on the lower front, most of which are hidden when the coat is buttoned as shown. It is becoming quite difficult to find any pieces at all from this era, much less ones in wearable condition, so this lovely frock coat is a real find!
