Description
This magnificent 1920's evening cape is made of ivory silk satin brocade with dark metallic gold threads in an Asian-inspired floral pattern. The cape ties at the neck with a wide scarf, rather like an extra long ascot. Both the scarf ties and the entire hem of the cape are decorated with fabulous ivory fringe that is sixteen inches long. The fringed front edges of the cape curve down to the straight hem across the back. The fabric is gathered across the shoulders, below the flat, wide scarf at the neckline. Floral embroidery at about hip height adds even more textural interest. Bright red, yellow, pale purple, blue and green are the colors used, but on the back and the right side, the red embroidery floss has faded to a soft peach. This does not really detract from beauty of the embroidery. (It actually looks rather pretty this way as if the fading was a design choice, to make the pattern asymmetrical.) The ivory silk chiffon lining of the cape is in excellent condition, and overall the cape is in very good condition. Other than the embroidery fading, the only other issue is that some of the metallic threads in the brocade have tarnished to a darker color, particularly around the shoulder area (see photos). This elegant piece of 1920's eveningwear will look stunning over a simple gown or cocktail dress.
