Description
This gold metallic fabric evening coat and matching gold and ivory brocade dress have a story to tell. Once upon a time, in 1969, a lady was dating a federal judge, who invited her to President Nixon's inaugural ball in Washington D.C. The lady in question, who was always very chic and often made her own clothing, whipped up this gown and matching coat set for the occasion. She had a lovely time at the ball, and although the romance didn't pan out, she saved the dress and coat, together with the gold metal wristband from the event, and passed them along to her niece. The niece wrote this little story on a note-card attached to the coat, thereby sharing the secret history of this show-stopping garment with us. The coat is made of fuzzy metallic gold fibers, which are extremely sparkly. It is A-line in shape, most fitted at the shoulders and arms and flaring outward at the floor-length hem. It has a small collar and closes with three gold metal buttons and loops. It is lined with gold acetate satin. The matching dress is not really in wearable condition--although there is plenty of useable fabric should you wish to create another dress or other project with it. It has several stains, some larger, some smaller, including: a stain in the front pleat of the skirt, a small stain on the bow, some underarm yellowing and the largest stain at the center back of the skirt (see photo). The original owner had a good time wearing this dress, eating, drinking and partying at the ball, and unfortunately it shows. The dress has been dry cleaned twice but the stains are still visible. However, the coat is in very good, totally wearable condition, with one small spot on the lining, visible only from the inside. It will make a lovely outer layer for your own "fairy tale" event. We are including the dress for the price of the coat, for only the additional cost of shipping both pieces, in order not to separate this set.
