Evening glamour, 1930s style! This 1930s dress in black rayon crepe with sheer mesh and shiny black sequins trim was intended to be a full-length evening gown, but it is a bit shorter on our (tall) mannequin, so it could also be worn as a cocktail dress for a taller lady. The front neckline, shoulders and upper arms have inset panels of sheer mesh, decorated with concentric lines of sequins. (We believe that these are gelatin sequins, common at that time. So, the dress is not vegan-friendly—nor should you get it wet!) The pointed collar has a sequined “ascot” hanging from its center. The bodice is gathered under the bust, into the pointed waist seam, above a hip-length peplum. The amazing dolman sleeves are very full at the top and then tapered from below the elbows to the wrists, where they are fastened with tiny snaps. The peplum is split at the center back, with a deep keyhole opening from waist to collar, fastened at either end with faceted black glass buttons and fabric loops. Under the peplum, the waist is fastened with a tiny hook and eye and snaps. The skirt flares just a bit from hips to hem, and will be full- to ankle-length, depending on your height. While totally wearable, and totally fabulous, this dress is in very good condition, with these small flaws: a few scattered pinholes in the skirt and one larger (pencil-eraser-sized) hole in front, nearly hidden underneath the lower edge of the peplum (none of which will be visible is a dark slip is worn underneath the dress), a tiny mend in the fabric near the hem of the right sleeve, and some sequin loss, especially on the left shoulder area. If you are handy with a needle, the sequins could be replaced, as the loss is not too significant. Please see our photos for more details, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. This elegant 1930s evening dress is dry-cleaned and ready to make an appearance at your next event!
