This floral-patterned silk brocade and lace black Victorian mantelet, capelet or wrap dates from the late 1880s or early 1890s. It designed to drape over the shoulders and function as a lightweight jacket or shawl (although it appears to have separate sleeves, this is an illusion). The mantelet fastens in front with tiny hooks and eyes, from the miniature mandarin collar to the waist. It is trimmed with ruffled bands of beautiful black lace (some of which is missing—see photos). The front of the capelet has long tails, sometimes called lappets, while the back is quite short and flares out just a bit at the center of the hem, to accommodate the full or bustled skirt styles popular at the time. The shoulder area is puffed or gathered. Lined with brown polished cotton, this Victorian short cape is in very good condition, quite sturdy for its age, its only issue the missing lace trim, as mentioned above. (It would certainly be possible to replace this missing lace with vintage or modern lace trim, if one has moderate sewing skills.) Note: the shoulder area is quite narrow by modern standards, so please check the measurements carefully and feel free to ask us any questions about size and fit.
