Description
This 1940's black silk taffeta gown was probably intended to be worn underneath a sheer over-dress of lace or chiffon, but it is certainly modest enough for a modern lady to wear on its own. The sweetheart bodice is edged with a narrow ruffle and is shirred on both sides of a center front flat panel. The waist seam is pointed in the center and the full-length skirt flares outwards towards the hem. The dress closes with a row of black metal snaps in the side seam. When it came to us, it no longer had straps (and no internal structure in the bodice, such as boning, that would be normal for a strapless dress), so we have added these straps, which could be replaced pretty easily with any other type if desired. The dress is in very good condition, with the replaced straps and a few pinholes in the silk (far too tiny to be visible when the dress is worn) as its only issues. You could, of course, choose to wear it as a slip, but I think it would also make a lovely evening gown.
