Description
The shape of this 1950’s clutch coat reminds me of the very full “cocoon coats” from the 1920’s. The fabric of the coat is lovely black wool and mohair with a bit of sheen, and the lining is sumptuous black rayon velvet (with black satin in the dolman sleeves). You’ll feel mighty posh enveloped by black velvet, and your face framed by the velvet-trimmed notched portrait collar. Although the coat has a single button hidden under the overlap in front to help keep it on, it is really a clutch style, and the nap of the wool is slightly worn along the section of the front edge where it has been “clutched” by its previous owner. The back of the coat has an inverted pleat for extra fullness. It is in very good condition, with its only issues being the wear at the front edge as mentioned, and a few stitches needed at each underarm in the lining, where the velvet meets the satin fabric. This elegant coat is formal enough to wear over a gown, and simple enough for everyday wear. Sizing is difficult due to the fullness of the cut, but it seems to fit like a modern medium to large, with room to move. The sleeve length will fit a modern size regular to tall, but a be too long for a petite.
