Description
Quintessentially cool, these black leather pants by Bonnie Cashin for Sills & Company make me think of a “haute beatnik” (like Kim Novak’s fabulous, fashionable witch character in the 1959 film “Bell, Book and Candle.”) Probably dating from the late 1950’s as well, the pants are a great example of Bonnie Cashin’s design aesthetic: chic, casual, with unusual fasteners and soft, supple leather. The pants are shaped like other capri-style pants of the era, fitted at the waist with 2 tiny pleats on each side of the waistband, more full through the hips, and tapering to the ankle. The front yoke, horizontal pockets, and 2 side seam metal zippers are all great details, but the most unusual element is the back-buckled “peplum.” The leather is in great shape, showing some normal wear, but the only issue being some crackling on the center section of the peplum strap where it buckles. The black satin lining is not in the best condition, faded and needing repair to the center seam. The lining could be repaired, replaced, or left as is, since it obviously won’t show when the pants are worn.
