Description
When I think of 1950s "souvenir" wool jackets with cute felt appliqués, I would usually expect to see one from Mexico, as these are pretty common from that era. This ornately decorated, bright blue wool "souvenir" jacket, however, is from Germany--Bavaria to be precise. I believe that it dates from the early 1950s, due to the square, padded shoulders and the rounded collar. It closes with a heavy metal zipper in front, has bust darts for shaping and is lined with contrasting, bright red fabric. There are two large patch pockets on the front and the shape of the jacket is slightly flared from the bust to the hem. As for the intricate appliqués, on the front we have: a Bavarian shield, flowers, ladybugs, fruit, a large radish(?) and what looks like a monk, holding a radish. The pockets have a man and a lady in traditional garb and each sleeve has a scene with a large pine tree and a small cottage. All of the appliqués have wool embroidery decorating the felt cutouts. We have saved the best for last though--on the back, there is a huge appliqué of a mountain cottage, with a fellow up to no good whatsoever and a tiny black cat observing as he illicitly tries to crawl into a lady friend's window. The embroidered commentary, loosely translated, reads, "In the mountains there is no sin"--maybe a German version of "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"? The details on this jacket are really fantastic--the man climbing in the window even has actual suede lederhosen on! It is in very good to excellent condition, with one very minor moth munch in the ivory wool of the back panel, a loose stitch or two in the wool embroidery and some fading to the pine tree appliqué on the right sleeve (not to the whole sleeve, just to the appliqué). This novelty jacket is unique, funny, very well made and will certainly be a conversation-starter!
