Description
This black silk satin evening coat with a lovely cape-back dates from circa 1929-1930. The shiny silk is woven with matte Greek key and horizontal line patterns, alternating in vertical stripes. It has a banded collar and falls open to the single button at the hip. (Snaps could be added at the collar, if you would prefer to have the option of wearing it closed at the neck.) The sleeves are flared from the elbow to the wrist, but the shoulder area of the coat is fitted and quite small--please check the shoulder measurement carefully. Otherwise, the coat has an unstructured silhouette in front, and is designed to fit loosely. In the back, there is a center flat pleat, and on each side, a panel has been attached to the back of the straight under-sleeves, to create the look of a cape. These cape-panels are longer in the center than on the sides where they attach and hang down in points at the center back of the coat. The cape-panels and the sleeves are lined with black silk crepe, while the body of the coat is lined with ivory silk crepe to the hips and black silk crepe below, with a scalloped ribbon border between the two colors of lining fabric. There is a single inner pocket with pleated edging to match the lining. The coat is in good condition with two issues: the ivory crepe portion of the lining has become discolored over the years and there is one tiny hole and a few small worn spots in the surface of silk satin fabric, just above the button at the hip (see close-up photo). This lovely evening coat is wearable with care, and has a great design!
