Description
The black rayon crepe of this late 1940s cocktail dress by Samuel Grossman is trimmed with black silk faille at the pointed collar and the wide waist sash and also covers the tiny buttons. A large, decorative rhinestone "buckle" accents the center of the waist sash. Curved seams add fullness to the bust area at the front of the bodice. The three-quarter-length dolman sleeves attach to the body of the dress at these same curved seams. The shoulders have medium-sized shoulder pads. The skirt is slightly gathered at the waist, but falls straight from the hips to the hem, with a small front slit. The back of the bodice has a center pleat and is also gathered where it meets an inset waist panel of the black rayon, above a wider panel of silk faille (all one piece with the front sash) that forms a small peplum. The dress is lined with silk taffeta at the back of the bodice and along the button placket in front. The sleeves and skirt are unlined. It closes in front with the covered buttons and then snaps closed at the waist, with a metal zipper below, partially hidden by the waist sash. This well-made cocktail is in excellent condition, and can be easily dressed up or down with accessories, depending on the occasion.
