Description
This handmade Murano glass necklace and earrings set in pink, copper and clear has wonderfully sparkly sommerso beads, graduated in size. "Sommerso", meaning "submerged" in Italian, is a technique of Murano glassmaking resulting in two contrasting colors. The inner color of glass is dipped into another color of molten glass to form another, outer layer, most usually clear. This style became particularly popular in the 1950s and early 1960s, which is when I believe this set was produced. The largest beads are at the center front of the necklace, and they are strung with bright gold caps and spacers to separate them. Since the beads are handmade, they are not perfectly uniform in size and shape. The button-style earrings are flat on the back (possibly cut from a single round bead) with clip backs. The necklace closes with a round "box" clasp. The set is in excellent condition.
