Description
The steel blue lightweight silk shantung of this 1950s skirt suit is "splashed" all over with ivory designs. The fitted jacket has a small peplum, cuffed three-quarter-length sleeves and covered, rhinestone-studded buttons. The skirt has small pleats below and to each side of the narrow waistband, a metal side zipper and a back kick pleat. It is just a bit wider at the hem than a typically straight and narrow "pencil skirt". The matching skinny belt can be worn over the jacket if desired; there are no belt loops present so it is not necessary, but the jacket does look nice when belted. Both pieces are unlined. The suit comes with small piece of extra fabric. Since the jacket was unhemmed when we acquired it, I believe that it may have been shortened (hence the extra fabric) sometime in the later 1950s when suit styles changed a bit. It has been carefully hemmed to the length it was cut to at that time. The suit is in excellent condition, it's only issue some light discoloration to the belt from the backing fabric.
