Description
A lovely mix of textures, this late 1940s formal has a skirt made of alternating bands of lightweight, semi-sheer white cotton voile and darling white cotton eyelet. The all-eyelet-fabric bodice has tiny cap sleeves and a split v-neckline. The piped, curved seam at the waist is slightly dropped (below the natural waist) and the full-length skirt is gathered below the waist seam. The skirt is full at the hem, but narrower at through the hips, more A-line than circular in shape. Shown here with a very full, hoop-style crinoline, the dress may also be worn with just a plain white slip for a softer, less full silhouette. The bodice of the dress is unlined, while the skirt section has a white (probably rayon) taffeta lining with a wide overlay of soft tulle trimmed with crochet lace underneath the lowest voile tier. The dress is in good, wearable condition with one small tear in the eyelet of the skirt and one very faint, small stain and tiny hole on the right side of the bodice (see photos). There are also a few light, pinhole-sized spots scattered over the skirt, which should not be visible when the dress is worn. Originally intended as a party dress, this sweet summer formal would also make a pretty wedding gown for a bride who wants a more causal look.
