This ultra-feminine, mixed-lace Edwardian tea gown combines both machine-made, white cotton Mechlin lace and bands of slightly darker, ivory crochet lace (used for the inset waistband, tow more rows in the skirt section, and trimming each shoulder). Contrasting panels of pin-tucked, pale rose-pink organdy are set into the puffed, elbow-length sleeves, the pleated, full bodice, and the skirt. The dress has the high, tight collar, slightly drooping shoulders (with extra fullness in the mid-sleeve), and “pigeon-front” full, draped “mono-bust” that are all typical of the Edwardian era, circa 1901-1910. Tea gowns like this one were designed to give women of the period a break from wearing their constrictive corsets, and therefore tend to be made of softer, more comfortable materials, and have a straighter, looser silhouette than other garments of the era. (Although this dress is quite small by modern standards, it is by no means proportioned to require a corseted waist. See measurements.) This elegant Edwardian lace tea gown fastens in back with a row of tiny shell buttons, from neck to hip. It is in good, totally wearable condition, with these issues: some light yellowing at the underarms, and a few yellowish spots, most noticeable on the pink fabric insets (see photos). We have not attempted any special spot removal techniques, since the dress is quite clean, otherwise, and the material is somewhat fragile by its nature. The lace feels sturdy for its age and it is remarkably intact!
