This New York Creation label 1940s dress with peplum has beaded and metallic embroidery trim encircling the neckline and on each patch pocket. This classic 1940s cocktail dress is made of true black, semi-sheer rayon crepe, which appears somewhat lightened in our photos, in order to better show details. The bodice has vertical darts for shaping and large shoulder pads. The three-quarter length sleeves are pleated up on their inner sides and tapered slightly at their hems. The hip-length peplum ends before reaching the center back metal zipper. The skirt is just below knee-length on our mannequin (a bit longer if you are petite) and flares a bit from hips to hem. The dress is unlined, and due to the somewhat sheer nature of the fabric, you will want a slip underneath. Our last photo shows the dress unpinned from the mannequin, to give a better idea of its actual size. In very good condition, it has a bit of iron shine to the surface of the crepe here and there. Also, some of the gold metallic embroidery has tarnished, making it appear green (see close-up photo). This does not seriously detract from its appearance—I actually rather like the green color! We have not tried to remove it with any kind of metal cleaner, fearing to harm the fabric under it--although, as with all of our vintage clothing, it has been dry-cleaned and is ready to wear.
