1940s skirt suit black rayon jacquard bustle effect | S

1930s - 1940s Clothing

This late 1940s skirt suit in a fabulous “comets” jacquard-weave, black rayon faille has a darling design at the back of the jacket and skirt! The notched hem of the jacket is curved upward on each side to the waist, and trimmed with a double bow. This bow perches above the fullness from the double inverted pleat at the center back, creating a silhouette inspired by 19th century bustle skirts. From the front, the suit has classic late 1940s details, including shoulder pads, rounded lapels, three-quarter-length cuffed sleeves, and vertical seaming to shape the waist. The skirt has a fitted waistband fastened with a hook and eye, and a side seam metal zipper. Its hem is just a bit longer at the center back than in front, to add to the bustle effect. Both pieces of the suit are unlined, mid-weight rayon faille. The abstract “comets” pattern woven into the fabric is shinier than the background. The jacket buttons in front, and the center of the 3 fabric-covered buttons is more faded /purple-toned than the other 2, the only flaw that I see with this fun 1940s skirt suit. It is in very good, near excellent condition.
