This mid-1950s Bes-Ben hat features a flock of pink floral-embroidered butterflies, atop a black rayon jersey crown, trimmed with a scalloped row of pink pearls. Each butterfly appliqué is wired and three-dimensional, and the center top of the cap-style hat has three butterflies attached “wing-to-wing”, to make them equally visible from all sides. The black jersey fabric is layered over a stiff mesh base, with a grosgrain inner band, where the Bes-Ben label and model numbers are sewn into the hat. Small combs on each side will help keep the hat in place when worn. This 1950s millinery creation from famous Chicago hat designer Benjamin Green-Field is in excellent condition, with a few visible stitches on the underside of the jersey, where the butterflies are attached—not a flaw, but worth a mention.
