This circa 1960s beret hat is made of black rayon velvet, with off-black satin ribbon “stripes” and a jaunty black silky tassel on its right side—too cute! The satin fabric also forms a spiral at the center top of the rounded crown, to which the tassel is attached. The hat crown is structured (not like a knit fabric beret), and it’s asymmetrical, dipping lower on the right side than the left. The outer velvet fabric is layered over a nice quality wool felt base, which gives it stability. There is a grosgrain inner band, and a bit of grosgrain has also been used to anchor the spot where the tassel/spiral are attached to the crown. In very good condition, the only issue with this darling velvet hat is some fading to the satin trim, turning it to a slightly purplish-black, rather than a true black. It’s not a serious flaw—we actually think it’s rather pretty!--but worth noting.
