Size: The curved brim measures 22” from the bottom of one side, to the opposite edge. The flat back section measures 7.25” tall and 5.5” wide.
This circa 1900s to 1910s antique bonnet in pleated black taffeta has a flat back and a narrow brim, with ribbon ties for under the chin. Dating from sometime after around 1900, and possibly as late as the end of the 1910s, it was most likely made for a conservative, older lady of the time, who wanted to continue wearing the this hat style, popular in an earlier era. It is a great style for a steampunk Victorian look, since it has elements that reference much earlier decades. The bonnet has picot-edged black ribbon bows trim on the top and plain black satin ribbon (most likely replaced) along its lower edge and to tie the hat under the chin. The bonnet is fully lined. The pleated brim is wired, as is the outer edge of the flat back section. The wire inside the brim has broken in some places, causing the rippled effect, but could be pretty easily replaced, if desired. There is also a faint, light mark on the back of the bonnet (water mark, perhaps?). This antique black bonnet is in very good, totally wearable condition, and it would great for costume or stage wear!
