This beaded 1920s dress in beautiful black silk satin is accented with bright red and silver glass beads in a floral design from waist to hem. The dress has the classic 20s “tube” shape, hanging straight down from the shoulders to the hem, with a pleated panel on the left side, from the hip to the hem. The pleated panel is trimmed with round glass buttons, at one time painted red to match the beading, but with a fair amount of paint loss visible. The intricate glass beadwork is quite thick, almost three-dimensional where it forms the large flowers. Although there are a few beads missing here and there, overall the beading is in wonderful condition; the missing beads will be quite difficult to notice and any loose strands have been carefully stabilized, to prevent future bead loss. The silk fabric seems reasonably sturdy, able to be worn, with care. There is one carefully darned area under the right arm, shown in our last photo; it seems stable. The deep hem (5 ½ inches) has been taken up several times in the past, to conform to the fashion for higher and higher hemlines as the decade progressed, no doubt. The dress is unlined (we recommend wearing a slip underneath) and its only fastenings are three metal snaps at the left shoulder. This fabulous 1920s “flapper” cocktail or evening dress is in very good condition, with these minor issues: the paint loss on the glass buttons, some minor bead loss and the darned spot under the right arm, as described above, and also a bit of discoloration along the edge of the underarm area (see close-up photo). It has not been dry-cleaned by us, due to the glass beadwork which could be damaged by cleaning. We do have more photos of this gorgeous dress--if you would like to see them, just ask us. The black with bright red color combination is lovely and quite dramatic!
