This black rayon crepe, fringed late 1940s cocktail dress is seriously fabulous! Lavish strands of rayon fringe trim the crisscross style, v-neck bodice, and the lower portion of the skirt. The dolman sleeves have large shoulder pads, and taper to the points at the front of each wrist, with zippers at the cuffs. The fringed ends of the narrow sash attached to each side seam tie at the back of the waist, enhancing the crisscross effect of the bodice. The dress is unlined, and fastens with a metal zipper at the side seam, as well as the two metal sleeve zippers. In very good condition, the dress has some looser strands of fringe in the section that drapes the upper bodice (not sure if this is original), and two small faded spots, one at each sleeve hem, near the zippers (see close-up photo—it is less obvious in person, as seen on the mannequin) Perhaps the fading was caused by some trim that was later removed from the cuff/zipper area, or discoloration caused by the fabric resting against the metal of the zippers, for many years? The faded spots are small enough that they could easily be hidden by decorative buttons or other period-appropriate trim. The dress has been freshly and carefully dry-cleaned, to protect the fringe from potential damage or tangling. This authentic 1940s fringed dress looks like something out of a film noir character’s closet!
