A fabulous 1940s tilt hat in black straw, this cutie features red and pink flowers tucked into little “pockets” at the center front of the crown, created by folds in the textured straw crown, which are edged with grosgrain piping. A chin-length veil adds a film noir-worthy air of mystery. The curved, elongated back of the hat’s crown is designed to hug the back of the head when the hat is worn, tilted backwards to frame the face, as shown. In very good condition, this authentic 1940s straw hat has a few small breaks in the veiling (best seen in side view photos), and a tiny tear in the inner grosgrain band (not seen when worn).
The “New York Creation” label tells us that the hat dates from 1941 or after (although no later than the late 1940s, based on the style). The label was established in that year by The New York Dress Institute (a joint organization formed by NYC manufacturers and the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union), to promote clothing and accessories created in New York.
