This luscious dark chocolate rayon velvet 1930s cocktail dress features smocked or gathered sections at the front waist, shoulders and neckline, to create soft draping in the bodice and the upper part of the sleeves. The calf-length skirt is nearly straight, with just a bit more fullness at the hem than at the hips. The bracelet-length sleeves and the back of the high neckline are closed with covered buttons and loops, while the side seam opening closes with snap fasteners. The lightweight rayon velvet is unlined and very soft to the touch—it feels lovely! In good condition, the dress is sturdy, recently cleaned and ready to wear. However, the velvet fabric on a few of the covered buttons and at the back of each elbow is almost completely worn though—just the nearly sheer backing of the velvet remains. This dress was much loved, clearly! Shortening the sleeves would be one way to solve this issue, since the wear to the button fabric is not nearly as noticeable. This less-than-perfect but still wearable 1930s dress has been priced accordingly.
