Description

This 3-piece mid-1960s skirt suit by Ben Zuckerman in charcoal gray wool is beautifully tailored! It includes a sleeveless top, a knee-length skirt with a sassy, pleated hem, and a hip-length, peacoat-style, double-breasted jacket that could double as an outerwear layer. The boxy-fit jacket has three-quarter sleeves and is very slightly shaped at the waist by vertical seaming, before flaring out a tiny bit towards the hem, which has 2 small pleats in back. It closes in front with 1 of the rows of black plastic buttons; the other row is decorative. Vertical slit pockets sit between the front and side seams, on each side of the waist. The sleeveless top has a round neckline and princess seaming for subtle shaping at bust and waist. It fastens with a metal zipper in back. The skirt is gently fitted from waistband to about mid-thigh by vertical seaming, then opens into small pleats from mid-thigh to hem. The pair of front vertical seams on the jacket and the skirt line up with each other –a nice detail! The skirt has an inner grosgrain ribbon waistband and closes with a side seam metal zipper and hooks and eyes at the waist. The jacket and skirt are both lined with fine black silk twill, while the blouse is lined with a lighter-weight, plain weave black silk.

According to the wonderful label resource at the Vintage Fashion Guild, the maker of this suit, Ben Zuckerman, was known for the quality tailoring of their ladies’ suits and coats.  Also from the VFG label resource: "The designer at Zuckerman was Harry Shacter, who was known for his ability to design suits and coats that were inspired by the Paris collections, but that were also highly wearable." This true vintage 1960s skirt suit is in excellent condition, freshly dry-cleaned, with no issues to note. The high-quality, heavyweight wool in a diagonally-textured, twill weave will keep you warm and stylish, whether you choose to wear all 3 pieces together as shown, or mix and match them with other pieces from your wardrobe.
