Label: Ballantyne of Peebles, 100% Cashmere, Made in Scotland, hand beaded in Hong Kong
This cream and pastel-beaded cashmere cardigan by Ballantyne of Peebles (in Scotland) is one of the loveliest 1950s beaded sweaters that we have handled in our 22 years of selling vintage. Iridescent sequined flowers in pink, yellow, and white are accented with beaded leaves in shades of palest green, pink, white, and lavender. The entire sweater is embellished with the beads and sequins. The cardigan has a 1950s vintage shape, with three-quarter-length sleeves and a round neckline. It is moderately fitted at the shoulders and bust, with ribbed trim at the cuffs, neckline, and hem. The hem, located at approximately the the natural waist, is slightly more fitted than the body of the sweater, since the ribbed trim does not have quite as much give to it—see measurements for details. The cardigan fastens in front with a row of pearl buttons, and the body (not the sleeves) is lined with ivory chiffon. The fine cashmere will add a layer of warmth without significant weight—great to layer over your favorite close-fitting tops or dresses. It is in excellent condition, with no issues to note. According to the ever-useful Vintage Fashion Guild’s Label Resource, by the 1950s “Ballantyne was recognized as one of the finest makers of cashmere in the world”. Here is your chance to own a mid-century vintage classic: a gorgeously beaded cashmere cardigan sweater by an historic Scottish maker!
