This asymmetrical black felt, early 1930s hat has a brim that frames the face like a shallow bonnet on one side, and curves down over the right ear on the other. On the left side, above the turned back brim, the rounded crown is trimmed with feather “flowers” inserted into the narrow black grosgrain ribbon band. Underneath this upturned section of the brim, the lower edge of the crown is trimmed with ribbon (most visible in our photo of the underside of the hat). The brim disappears completely at the back-left, where the hat curves to fit flat against the back of the head, and is secured by a matching felt-trimmed hatpin. Because the hat has a shallow crown, designed to just rest on top of the head, the inner circumference of the crown is correspondingly smaller than that of a deeper-crowned hat (see measurements). This jaunty 1930s ladies’ hat is quite nicely made, and it is in excellent to mint condition, appearing unworn. The felt body of the hat is stamped inside the crown with “Merrimac Hat Corp., Made in USA, 100% Wool”.
