An ivory silk shantung collar forms a lovely mini-capelet over the shoulders of this early 1950s black rayon crepe cocktail dress. Wide black velvet ribbon is threaded through the front of the collar and comes to a point at the center back. It is accented with a sparkling rhinestone brooch on the left side (removable for cleaning). The cap sleeves of the bodice are too tiny to be visible underneath the wide collar. Medium-to-large-sized shoulder pads are attached inside. Darts shape the bust area. The straight skirt has a kick pleat in back. Double-pleated diagonal hip pockets add visual interest to the silhouette—as well as being functional. The rayon crepe fabric is lightweight enough to be semi-sheer; it is lined only at the upper front section of the skirt, as you can see from our photos. So, you will probably want to wear a slip or tights underneath. The dress has a metal zipper at the mid-back, only—it does not go all the way to the top of the dress, which means it has to be slipped on over the head. In very good condition, the dress has a few minor issues: there are thread belt loops present, but no original belt, and the silk collar is a bit rumpled at the back of the neck, try though we did to steam it more flat, after we had is dry-cleaned. There is also a tiny pinhole in the collar, where the brooch has been moved in the past. This elegant 1950s cocktail dress will frame the face beautifully for photos, with its gorgeous collar. It also has a very cute label, “Mademoiselle Juliette”!
