Fuchsia eyelash rayon skirt suit late 1950s M-L

1950s Clothing

This slub-textured “eyelash fabric” late 1950s skirt suit in bright fuchsia combines a short, belted jacket and a pencil skirt. The jacket has a fitted waist seam and a small peplum, a large collar and cuffed, three-quarter-length sleeves. The narrow belt can be worn over it, or not, as you prefer. The jacket has a row of gathers above the waist seam to create fullness in back, and 2 tiny tucks at each elbow. The skirt has a side seam metal zipper and a single button at the waistband. 2 pleats at the back skirt hem allow for greater ease of walking. The unusual fabric has subtle, feathery thread “eyelash” strands scattered over its horizontally slubbed surface. The fabric is relatively lightweight for suiting, probably a blend of rayon and acetate that feels like silk shantung, with a plain, satin weave on its under side. The suit is unlined, but the smooth satin back of the fabric will make it very comfortable without a lining. In excellent to mint condition, the suit is deadstock or unworn, with no issues to note. It is labeled a vintage half size (1950s size 20 ½), so please check the measurements carefully, since half-sized garments had slightly different proportions than regular sizes. Since it is too large for our mannequin, it is shown pinned to her; the 3rd-to-last photo shows the jacket unpinned, to give a better idea of its actual shape. This bold, pinkish-red late 1950s skirt suit can be easily dressed up for evening—just add a sparkling rhinestone brooch, and it’s cocktail attire!
