Marimekko, the Finnish company famous for its fabulous printed fabrics, was founded in 1951. The company’s wonderful textiles were made into a wide range of items, including many for home decorating, and also versatile and youthful clothing designed with clean and simple lines, so as not to compete with the bold prints. The label on this mauve-tinged mocha and black, horizontally-striped cotton maxi dress in their “Galleria” print, has a copyright date of 1966 on its tag, so we have a pretty good idea of its exact birthday! The dress has narrow and straight, three-quarter-length sleeves, a high collar, and large, half-circular pockets on each side—hooray! The pockets are accented by topstitching, which is the only embellishment on this otherwise minimalist dress. The dress has bust darts for shaping, but is intended to have a loose, unconstructed fit below the bust, flaring a bit from hips to hem. The mid-weight 100% cotton fabric is unlined. The dress fastens with a nylon zipper in back, and comes with a narrow sash belt in the mocha color, to cinch the waist or not, as you choose. In very good to near excellent condition, this mod 1960s Marimekko dress has only one issue: a faint pale line at the hem, showing where it had been previously taken up.
