This va-voom Gianni Versace Couture mini-dress from the early 1990s is a classic little black cocktail dress, as seen through the lens of the designer who valued confidence and individuality in his ideal client: “Do not go into trends. Do not allow fashion take you over, choose who you want to be and what do you want to show with your clothes and lifestyle.” This sexy, bold coatdress in black velvet and black, lightweight wool crepe features medium-sized shoulder pads, above a very bare sweetheart neckline, almost like a bustier in its shape and fit. The bracelet-length sleeves have fitted cuffs. Vertical darts at the waist and hips create the hourglass silhouette. The hips are trimmed with faux/decorative pocket flaps. The front of the dress fastens with large, sparkling buttons. The bust and sleeves are made of luxe cotton and rayon blend velvet, and completely covered in rows of topstitching—note the curved stitching at the bust cups, to emphasize the shape! The body of the dress and the sleeve cuffs are lightweight wool crepe, with a slight crisscross texture. The cuffs also have rows of topstitching. The dress is lined with black silk. In very good condition, this catwalk-ready Versace dress has 2 issues to note. One, the rhinestone and pearl buttons are replacements (the originals were removed--and not returned--by the previous owner’s drycleaner). I did my best to replace them with the most gorgeous (probably 1950s-1960s) buttons that we could find in the correct sizes, and will include one extra pearl-center button with the dress. (Please note that the buttons on the sleeves are smaller, and a different style.) The second issue may or may not be an issue for you: after 2 dry-cleanings, the dress still retains a hint of the original owner’s perfume. If you are very sensitive to scent, then this dress may not be for you, but I don’t find it overpowering, or unpleasant. Channel your inner super-model, and wear this fabulous early 90s Versace dress with confidence!
