This 1940s nurse’s uniform dress in white-on-white check fabric feels like lightweight nylon, making it most likely to be from the late 1940s. (The longer-length skirt would place it either just before or after WWII, but nylon use in clothing was very rare in the earlier period, so we are dating to circa late 1940s.) The uniform has long sleeves with puffed, pleated shoulders, and turned-back cuffs. Decorative horizontal pleats add visual interested to the button-front bodice. The slightly flared skirt has an asymmetrical button closure, and large pockets. The inset waistband continues all the way around the waist, with flat pleats above it, which add fullness (and needed freedom of movement!) to the back of the bodice. All of the white shell buttons are actually “studs” on metal shanks, making them easily removable for cleaning (similar to one-sided cufflinks—see close up photo, if you are unfamiliar with this button style). The lightweight fabric is semi-sheer, and will require a slip underneath. Labeled a vintage size 18, the uniform is approximately a modern size medium, but please consult our measurements for more details about size. This authentic vintage 1940s nurse’s uniform dress is in excellent condition, perfect for a period nurse costume or 1940s-era re-enactor. Our last photo shows the dress unclipped from the mannequin, to give a better visual idea of its size.
