This dark fuchsia, purplish-red bouclé wool 1950s coat is labeled “Schiaparelli”—one of the many items produced in the United States as licensed, ready-to-wear garments, but under the designer’s name, after 1950. The high “funnel” collar fastens with a single plastic button, to match the buttons fastening down the front of the coat from neck to just below the hips. The full-length, voluminous, A-line silhouette of the coat has plenty of “swing”! The 2 vertical pleats in front from neck the hem run along each side of the buttons. 2 inverted pleats in the back extend from hips to hem. The upper back of the coat has diagonal seams that straighten out to meet the inverted pleats—a nice design detail! The shoulder line is soft, but enhanced by small shoulder pads, in a typical early 1950s style. The full-length, dolman sleeves have diamond-shaped insets under the arms, for ease of movement. Without or without the famous Schiaparelli name, this is a lovely coat! The medium-weight, nubby bouclé wool has an inner lining of rayon satin, woven with an “S” pattern. Between the wool outer layer and the satin lining is a second, unseen lining layer of blanket-like, knit wool fabric, for added warmth. In very good to excellent condition, the coat does have some visible stitching on the satin lining that serves no apparent purpose, since it does not appear to be damaged. The fabulous color and functional warmth of this licensed 1950s Schiaparelli coat make it a worthy addition to your winter wardrobe!
