Lightweight flecked navy wool 1950s princess coat S-M

1950s Clothing

This navy and white flecked, lightweight wool 1950s princess coat has a full and swingy, split-front skirt below the fitted bodice. Diagonal and vertical bust darts help to create the coat’s hourglass silhouette. It has medium-sized shoulder pads and cuffed, three-quarter-length sleeves. The unusual neckline is a long square, above the 4 covered buttons that fasten the coat down to the waist seam. Below the waist the coat has no fastenings, although the flared skirt section does have a small overlap at the center front opening. The lightweight wool feels more like traditional suiting material than a heavy coat fabric—best for spring and fall, or winter weather in a mild climate. The crisscrossing flecked pattern in the fabric reminds me of static, or a modern art print—a very mid-century design! The coat is fully lined with lovely lavender floral taffeta. This unique 1950s princess coat is in very good, near excellent condition. The only issue to note is a minor flaw in the fabric weave (not a hole) near the left side waist (see close-up photo). This is unlikely to be noticed when the coat is worn.
