This magenta velvet “pumpkin” style pillbox 1960s hat combines strips of rayon velvet on its high sides, with a round flat velvet crown. A tiny gold-tone butterfly pin, set with iridescent aurora borealis rhinestones, trims the right side. The magenta jersey base of the hat shows through the velvet side strips. The crown is lined with magenta taffeta. Like all 1960s pillboxes, this hat was originally designed to sit up high, towards the back of the head, as shown--although you could wear it tilted more forward, if you choose. In excellent condition, the hat bears a label from the former Charles A Stevens department store, here in Chicago. The vibrant purplish-red color is unusual, and lovely!
