This light gray wool twill vintage skirt suit by Malter dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s. It has the long lines newly popular at the very end of the 40s, post WWII, when some of the wartime restrictions on fabric use had been lifted. The slim, hip length jacket has large shoulder pads, long sleeves and three covered buttons. The small collar has a unique, notched design, echoed by the trompe l’oeil pockets at the hips, the right shoulder and the center back of the shoulders. (Two of these trompe l’oeil pockets actually conceal very tiny slit pockets or “watch pockets”—a double illusion!) Diagonal, pointed seaming on the jacket creates the illusion of a smaller waist—always a good design trick! The pencil skirt has a front kick pleat at the hem. This center front skirt seam conceals some extra fabric inside, in case of any necessary alterations—just over 3.5 inches of extra fabric. The skirt fastens with a metal zipper in the side seam and small hooks at the waistband. It has a 3 inch long hem, which can be let down if desired. The jacket is fully lined and the skirt is half-lined, both in darker gray, rayon crepe fabric. This high quality and well-made, late 40s or early 50s skirt suit by Malter is in excellent condition.
