The label on this multi-colored, striped cotton 1970s Marimekko dress is from the Design Research store. We know that the dress was purchased at the Cambridge store in the 1970s. In fact the dress has a copyright date of 1973 on its tag, so we even know the exact year! Marimekko, the Finnish company famous for its bright print fabrics, was first carried in the U.S. at the Design Research stores in the 1950s and 60s.  The most famous Design Research customer was probably Jackie Kennedy, who purchased several of their dresses and wore them during her husband's presidential campaign. This Marimekko 70s cotton dress has bright vertical stripes, put together in horizontal bands, creating the illusion of many separate squares. It has green buttons in front from the neck to the hips and at the wide cuffs. The cut is fairly straight and loose, fitted only at the shoulders and the narrow sleeves. It could also be worn belted, if you prefer, at the waist or at the hips. We have it shown with our white leather 1980s Morris Moskowitz belt; the belt not included with the dress, although it is for sale! The sleeves are not quite full-length, ending just above the wrist on our mannequin. The dress is in very good to excellent condition, its only issue a light mark where it had been hemmed up in the past. We have restored the original hem length.
