This Mexican novelty print cotton 1930s tunic-style blouse, artist’s smock top, or housecoat pairs a bold, bright-colored print with cherry red accents at collar, cuffs and pockets. A variety of Mexico-themed designs fill the many squares of the design, in shades of red, yellow and green against a black and off-white background. The plain red, cotton trim is matched by the bright red buttons that fasten the smock down the front and the sleeve cuffs. The lowest button on the blouse front is a very close, era-appropriate replacement, but you could easily change it with one of the matching sleeve buttons, to make the difference less obvious. The tunic or smock has a long, nearly straight/tubular design, unlike later smock tops that are more flared from bust to hem. The top has two patch pockets. The full-length sleeves are slightly gathered where they meet the flat shoulder yoke, adding a bit of fullness. The plain weave/calico cotton fabric is unlined. This novelty print 1930s smock top is in very good condition, with a faint, yellowed area, just above the last button, which is hidden by the overlap of the button placket when it is worn (see close-up photo).
