This late 1940s ladies’ coat in navy and brown plaid wool was designed to be warm, as well as stylish! Inside the medium-weight wool outer layer, the brown rayon crepe lining is backed with a layer of knit wool, almost like a thin blanket (see photo). This extra layer of lining adds a tiny bit of bulk to the fit, but a whole lot of warmth—totally worth it! The coat has a fitted bust and cinched waist, with curved darts for shaping. The straight sleeves have large shoulder pads. The lower “skirt” section of the coat is quite full, with flat pleats all around, and a single, inverted pleat at the center back. Two side seam pockets are hidden in the pleats. Below the round, notched collar, the coat fastens with brown plastic buttons, one of which, at the waist, is a replacement. We matched the originals as best we could, with a button of the same era. Other than this replacement button, the only issues to note are some light fading to the rayon lining fabric only (not seen when worn), and that the original belt is missing (at least, we think it must have had a belt, since thread belt loops are present, still). The youthful, “collegiate” style was intended for the juniors market (see label photo), and may have a slightly short-waisted fit (see underarm to waist measurement). This authentic vintage, late 1940s coat is in very good condition, and so very cute!
