This set of orange and silver silk, deco-patterned, belted men’s pajamas by Sulka dates to circa the 1940s. Sulka was a brand known for their high-quality men's accessories, often made of silk, such as scarves, robes, neckties--and elegant silk pajamas like these. Sulka customers at one time included famous folks such as the Duke of Windsor and Clark Gable, as well as the less-famous, but well-heeled consumer with a taste for the finer things in life. The pajamas are technically unisex, with traditional men’s pajama details like the 3 patch pockets, a belted waist on the longer-length pj top, and a button fly. The wide waistband on the pajama pants also fastens with a button and tab, and has a short section of elastic inserted at the center back, for comfy fit. The pants have cuffed hems. All of the buttons on the set are made of pearly grey shell. The top features a long pointed collar. The collar, pocket trim, and belt are all made of contrasting, sand-colored silk, as is the “tuxedo” stripe down the outer sides of the wide-leg pants. Both the top and the pants are intended to fit loosely, so bear this in mind when checking the flat measurements, above. The beautiful silk fabric is lightweight and unlined.
This 1940s silk pajamas set is in very good, near excellent condition, with one tiny spot on the back of the right shoulder (see close-up photo), and few faint press-marks (from ironing) on the sand silk trims. Both the top and pants have “A. Sulka & Company” labels. The set is approximately a vintage size men’s medium, labeled as a 38-B-40, but please see the measurements for more details about size.
