Rosewood heather lambswool cardigan sweater 70s-80s L

1980s clothing

This rosewood heather, soft and lovely lambswool cardigan sweater was made in Scotland, circa the 1970s or 80s, by James Pringle (not that other “Pringle of Scotland”, but James Pringle). Pringle turned around his family’s ailing textile business in the 1950s, when he began targeting the newly invigorated tourist trade on the Scottish island of Skye. From The Herald Scotland’s 2012 obituary of James Pringle: “James Pringle, who has died aged 87, was born into a family that had been in textiles for generations. But the family business and the wider industry were in a precarious state when he came up with the idea of a mill shop selling tweed and tartan direct to the public. His initiative provided a template for the entire industry and under his stewardship the company of James Pringle expanded from its historical bases in Inverness and Skye, with major new centres in Edinburgh and Wales. When he retired in 1989 the James Pringle business was bought by the Edinburgh Woollen Mill.” The mid-weight, finely woven lambswool of this cardigan will be great for layering: not too warm for spring and fall, but warm enough for winter wear, too. The sweater fastens with plastic buttons from round neckline to hem, with ribbed knit trim at the neck, sleeve cuffs and hip-length hem. It was designed for a slightly loose fit (and is too large for my mannequin), but should fit a range of sizes, from a very loose modern medium, to a closer fit on a modern large. This classic ladies’ lambswool cardigan is a pretty shade between pink and pale brown, and appears unworn, in excellent to mint condition.
