This c.1900, sage green wool, late Victorian or early Edwardian ladies’ suit is a bit of a puzzle. I think it has been significantly altered and refurbished for use as a stage costume, adding some out-of-time elements (like the extra-high waistband which is more 1910s, and the pleated hem ruffle to add length to the skirt). The satin facing on the jacket lapels and the satin insets on the skirt are not original, although they may have replaced similar trim that was deteriorating. Some of the lace appliqué trim may be original (the darker-colored lace), but most is probably not. The fitted, short jacket buttons in front and has tiny slit pockets that are lined with what is probably the original jacket lining fabric—a very delicate striped silk. The jacket has been relined in lilac silk organza (the body) and white acetate (the sleeves). The long sleeves have small gathers at the shoulder to add a bit of fullness. In back, the jacket has curved seams and a curved hem with double slits and 2 decorative buttons. The skirt length is quite a bit shorter in front than in back—originally much more so, before the pleated trim in front was added. It is also much more full in back, with large pleats gathered into the waistband. The (added) high waistband sits above the natural waist, and the skirt fastens in back with hooks and eyes.
In fair condition, wearable with reasonable care, this 1900s suit has 2 issues other than the replaced/added elements. There is some overall fading to the sage wool, as you can see from the color variations in the photos, and some scattered moth munches in the wool, the most noticeable, largest of which is about ½-inch in size, nearly hidden in the fold of the skirt on the right back section. It would still be quite useful as a 1900s to early 1910s costume or re-enactor attire. Someone went to quite a bit of trouble in the past, to make it sturdy enough for use!
