This early 1960s shift dress and coat set is by designer Vera Maxwell. Considered one of the originators of the “American Look” in the fashion world of the 1940s and 1950s, Maxwell designed under this label, “Vera Maxwell Original” until 1964. The set combines a lightweight silk shift dress in micro-stripes of green and blue, with a mid-weight, nubby wool and silk blend coat. The coat will be best for spring, fall, or warmer climates; it’s not heavy enough for true winter wear. The nubby coat fabric has a hint of gold-toned metallic fibers woven into it as well, which are echoed by the brass-colored buttons that fasten it in front—a subtle and lovely design choice! The coat is lined to match the silk dress. It has high, double back vents, princess seaming, bracelet-length sleeves, and welted vertical pockets with decorative pocket flaps. The lightweight silk shift dress has a high, round neckline trimmed with a bow, short sleeves, and a boxy, 1960s fit. It fastens in back with a plastic zipper, and it is lined with pale green silk. The coat is in excellent condition, but the dress has some flaws, and can be described as in good condition--certainly wearable. There is one small, light spot on the front of the dress, about 9” up from the hem (see photo). Also, the lining of the dress shows some damage under the arms, which should not be seen when the dress is worn (see lining photos). This classic 1960s dress and coat ensemble by an iconic American designer can also be worn as two separate pieces—always a plus!
