Description
This unusual 1930s evening cape in Asian-patterned ivory brocade has curved, peaked shoulders—perhaps inspired by the shape of a traditional pagoda roof! The creamy off-white brocade fabric is medium-weight with a crisp feel and a shine to its surface. I believe it is rayon or a rayon blend. The fabric is woven with Asian-style designs including a house or other building, a bridge, trees, and waves. The hip-length, flared, short cape fastens at the large rounded collar with a single hook and eye. Below the collar, 2 large “flowers” made of braided cord have 2 silky tassels and long double loops dangling from their centers. These dangling decorative elements frame the center front opening of the cape. Below each shoulder, the pointed peak extends down into an inverted pleat that stands out from the body to each side, like small wings! The actual shoulders of the cape sit inside these side pleats. Therefore, the cape’s width at the shoulders is smaller than it appears from the front and back views. The cape is fully lined with ivory rayon or rayon-blend taffeta. This cream brocade 1930s cape would be an elegant, lightweight evening layer, great for formal events--or for a bride!
Although freshly dry-cleaned, the cape still has some faint discoloration across the front waist area on both sides. This is fairly subtle--unlikely to be very visible when it is worn unless the cape is examined under bright lighting. There is also a line of discoloration across the inside edge of the collar, not seen when the cape is worn. See my several close-up photos.
