Description
This circa 1940s-50s vintage US Navy jumper is the upper half of a naval uniform, belonging to a Seaman (patch with 3 diagonal stripes on left sleeve). The fabric is a crisp and tightly woven, medium-weight, very dark blue gabardine. Based on the twill weave fabric (gabardine rather than melton wool) and the heavy brass front zipper, I believe this jumper may have been custom made of the original owner. I am not a military clothing expert, so please feel free to correct me! The jumper has the classic V-front sailor collar with 2 stars embroidered on the flap back corners, and off-white striping on the collar edges and the sleeve cuffs. The cuffs fasten with 2 anchor-insignia buttons each. There is a single slit outer pocket on the upper left chest, and 1 inner pocket with a button closure, on the right side. The jumper appears to have been hemmed shorter, which may place it after 1943, when the standard length for the US Navy jumper was changed by the military. The original owner’s ribbons are still present and will be included with the jumper. In very good condition, the only issues to note with the jumper are some darning/mending to the edges of the zipper opening at mid-torso (see close-up photo) and a bit of wear and yellowing to the (now) off-white striping/piping trim. This vintage US Navy uniform jumper or shirt has been freshly dry-cleaned and is ready to wear. It is relatively small, so please check the measurements below carefully.
