Description
This metallic brocade 1960s mini dress and matching coat set in a pale aqua and gold floral pattern is lavishly trimmed with creamy off-white mink fur at the coat’s high collar and down its front opening. The sleeveless A-line cocktail dress hits well above the knee on my mannequin, a true minidress. It features a split neckline below the high collar, covered (decorative) buttons and loops down the center front, and 2 vertical slit pockets at the hips. It has a fitted shape through the bust and waist, then flares out from below the waist to the hem. The dress closes in back with a metal zipper and is fully lined in aqua blue, lightweight silk. The metallic brocade fabric is a medium weight, probably a blend of rayon and acetate with gold lurex fibers.
The matching double-breasted evening coat is several inches longer than the dress and should have a slightly loose fit over it. It actually fastens with brocade-covered snaps hidden behind the left side of the front panel and the fur collar—the 2 rows of buttons are decorative. The coat has 2 pockets with flaps at the hips and straight, ¾-length sleeves. Like the dress, it is also fully lined in aqua blue silk. The mink fur trim is sewn on to the coat. It appears supple and in nice condition, well-cared-for and well-stored.
This fabulous mid-1960s mini-dress and matching coat set is in very good condition. The coat is in excellent condition, with no issues to note. The dress has some yellowing at the edges of the underarms which should be harder to notice due to the shininess and texture of the fabric (see close-up photos). This underarm area has been spot treated to remove any possible odor, but a bit of discoloration remains. The set was worn as a going-away outfit for a bride and I think this is a fun idea: something old, something new (to you) and something blue, all in one! Wear both pieces of this 1960s cocktail mini-dress and coat set together for fully fabulous effect, or mix with other pieces from your wardrobe to tone down the matchy vibe.
The smallest fit to the set is at the bust (both pieces), and at the shoulders and sleeves of the coat, for reference. Because of these areas, I have estimated it as a modern extra small. See detailed measurements, below.
