Description
This lightweight coat from the early 1950s is a clutch style with no fastenings, made of rib-textured black rayon faille. It is the perfect swingy coat for spring and fall, or warmer climates! The large collar and trompe l’oeil “cape” or pleated layer across the back of the coat are both decorated with a triple row of rouleaux: fabric tubes stuffed with cord to create a 3-D trim. The bracelet-length sleeves are tapered from the rounded shoulders to the cuffs. The coat is fully lined with striped black rayon satin. Intended for a loose fit, the body of the coat flares out from the bust to the hem. This New Look era, early 1950s coat is in very good condition, with a small area of wear under the left sleeve in back, a tiny scuff in the ribbed fabric at the right front, and very minor fading to the black fabric all over from age. See close-up photos for details. I estimate it will fit a modern size small to medium. It is most narrow/fitted at the shoulder area. The coat fit me pretty well (size 4 to 6 petite) over jeans and a heavy sweater, but will fit a larger size over a dress or lighter weight clothing.
