Description
This circa 1950s kimono or robe was made in Japan using a traditional jacquard-weave rayon brocade fabric in a pattern of bright gold Japanese characters on a black background. According to Google, some of the characters stand for “Good Fortune” and “Longevity”. The kimono is an authentic, traditional Japanese style with no fastenings and square, hanging panels below each three-quarter-length sleeve. The crisp, midweight rayon brocade is lined with white, lightweight plain weave rayon, similar to lingerie fabric. The 1950s kimono is in good, totally wearable condition. There are some dark streaks on the lining fabric on the left side, a small yellowed mark near the label, and some larger marks on the lining near the left side hem (see photos). None of these issues are seen when it is worn, since they are all on the inside/lining. The kimono has been freshly dry-cleaned, and has no odors or other issues to note. Excellent for lounging elegantly around the house, this true vintage kimono would also look great worn as a long evening jacket. The measurements were taken with about 8 inches of overlap at the front. Based on this amount of overlap, I estimate that it should fit a modern women’s size S to L, or a men’s size S to M. It could of course accommodate a larger size if worn more open.
