Description
A divine disco-era 1970s men’s suit in plush black cotton velveteen, this European-made 2-piece jacket and pant set could double as unique and unisex formalwear! The longer-length, 2-button jacket has large, squared shoulder pads, double vents at the back hem, 2 huge patch pockets, a single breast pocket, and multiple inner pockets. Subtle black-on-black topstitching accents the notched lapels, outer pockets, and the edges of the front opening. The jacket is fully lined with cream rayon taffeta in the sleeves and black rayon taffeta in the body. The black portion of the lining is accented with contrasting white topstitching. The straight-leg, flat-front trousers have a metal zipper at the fly, plus a button and hook at the waistband. They are quarter-lined with cream rayon taffeta inside the waistband, and from the waist to the knee in front only. The pant has 2 diagonal slit pockets at the side seams, and a single horizontal welt pocket in back with a button closure. The seat area of the pant was taken in slightly at some point by the original owner, but this is not noticeable from the outside of the fabric and was professionally done. The suit is labeled as made in Belgium by the Dutch brand Van Gils, which is still in business in the Netherlands. Established in 1948, Van Gils was originally known for making hats, shoes and formal suits like this one. It is quite nicely tailored, with lovely, high-quality details. In excellent condition, this elegant 70s velveteen suit has been recently dry-cleaned and is ready to wear to your next event!
SIZE: approx. 36-37 jacket. Men’s XS-S or women’s S to possibly M (labeled 42R, but measures MUCH smaller—see below).
JACKET.
- Chest: 39 inches flat, to fit approx. 36 or 37 max.
- Sleeve length: 33 (24 inches from shoulder seam).
- Sleeve width at bicep: 14 inches flat.
- Length: 30 inches from back of neck to hem.
- Shoulder to shoulder: 16 inches across back from seam to seam.
- Underarm to hem length: 19.5 inches.
TROUSERS.
- Waist: 33 inches flat, to fit 32 max.
- Hip: 37.5 inches flat, to it 35.5 max.
- Outseam length: 41 inches from waist to hem at side seam.
- Inseam length: 30 inches, with 2-inch hem.
- Rise: 25 inches total. 11 inches in front and 14 inches in back.
- Width at thigh: 21 inches flat
- Width at leg hem: 19 inches flat.
