Description
This multicolored fleck, tweed wool 1930s skirt suit includes a hip-length jacket and calf-length skirt. The suit fabric is an unusual combination of mauve, mocha-brown, peachy-pink, olive green and burgundy in a muted check pattern, with tiny flecks of other, brighter colors woven into the mid-weight, fuzzy wool tweed. The jacket is fitted at the bust and the narrow, unpadded shoulders and long sleeves, but slightly flared below the waist. 2 large, functional patch pockets with flaps trim the front hem. The jacket currently has only 3 brown plastic buttons of its original 4. I can include a similar button, if you’d like the option of adding one, although I think that the jacket does look nice with the high collar folded over as shown. The back of the jacket is the style star of this suit, with a sporty, western-style scalloped, topstitched yoke at the shoulders. Vertical inverted pleats below the yoke on each side extend down to the waist, to allow a bit more freedom of arm movement.
The skirt is fitted at the waist, narrow through the hips, then gently flared from hips to hem, with vertical pintucks both in front and in back. In back, the pintucks extend from the waist to the hem. In front, the tucks stop about 11 inches above the skirt hem, opening into a single pleat. The skirt is unlined and has no waistband, just some green ribbon binding and a grosgrain band on the inside of the waist. It fastens with a side seam metal zipper, a snap, and several hooks and eyes on the grosgrain band.
The jacket is lined with chocolate brown silk crepe fabric which has not survived nearly as well as the wool outer fabric. It has several worn areas as detailed in my photos. It would be quite easy to remove this silk lining, if you’d prefer to go without--or you could certainly reline the jacket if you are handy that way. The suit has been freshly drycleaned. It is overall in good condition, because of this lining damage and the missing top button. However, the tweed wool outer fabric looks great and is in excellent condition. This true vintage 1930s skirt suit is otherwise sturdy and very wearable!
